Yes…..and another Snyder book - ‘Black Earth’ - about the Holocaust….which includes discussion on Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Additionally ….beyond European history - his books ‘On Tyranny’, ‘The Road to Unfreedom’ and ‘On Freedom’ are very good.

Also _Bloodlands_ by Timothy Snyder is mandatory reading to give one some context on how Russians and Ukrainians view each other.

Ukrainian History

Some may remember the History classes that Bill Hottell used to host, each winter - yearly - for many years.(Some years, those classes were followed up with travel to the areas).

I came late to these classes, but they were very good. I think Bill’s last class was 2022-23 and was on the history of Ukraine, since the Russian invasion had just happened. Bills class discussed - by necessity - the context of all of Eastern Europe and Russia.

About this same time, I became aware of Timothy Snyder, Historian of Eastern Europe at Yale.
Snyder did a series of free lectures on the history of Ukraine. 25 lectures - about 45 minutes each. Excellent!

He has transcripts of those same lectures at: https://snyder.substack.com/p/making-of ... ne-lecture
And a course syllabus: https://snyder.substack.com/p/syllabus- ... ture-class
Unfortunately, you have to be a paid subscriber to his Substack to access those.
